Digital Compass Initiative

The cybersecurity apocalypse has a sales department.

Yesterday, the Internet was apparently about to die. Again.

I spent October 21 jumping from server to server, checking PHP installations, assessing exposure and deploying emergency fixes for two genuinely serious vulnerabilities.

The vulnerabilities were real. The danger was real.

The work was necessary.

The apocalypse, however, appeared to have a remarkably efficient marketing department.

And therein lies a rather uncomfortable truth about the modern cybersecurity industry.

Take a genuine technical flaw. Add uncertainty. Multiply it by spectacular headlines. Generate panic.

And then, miraculously, offer a monthly subscription to save civilization.

Meanwhile, the engineers maintaining the software upon which our entire digital economy depends are often working with a fraction of the resources available to those selling protection against its failures.

And now comes AI, providing the prophets of technological doom with an inexhaustible supply of new nightmares — and, naturally, new products to sell us.

We are gradually confusing the business of frightening people with the science of protecting them.

I wrote this article for Digital Compass Initiative because I believe cybersecurity has developed a serious intellectual, economic and even political problem.

It is not just about PHP2Shell.

It is about an entire industry, its incentives, its contradictions and the extraordinary profits generated by permanent fear.

We need engineers, not prophets.

Security, not theatre.

Evidence, not sermons.

Read the article. Challenge my arguments. Tell me where I'm wrong.

And if you've ever wondered whether the people announcing the next digital apocalypse might have a commercial interest in keeping us permanently terrified, share it.

Because the apocalypse may be excellent for business.

But resilience is considerably better for society.
